This is survivorship. This is community. This is breaking cycles of Violence.
Verenice* had been married for many years to a jealous and controlling husband, who constantly accused her of cheating in angry arguments. One night the argument escalated to a vicious physical attack, and Verenice managed to get a hold of her phone and call the police. The officers connected her to our crisis line, and Verenice sought safety in La Casa’s emergency shelter.
Safely settled in shelter, Verenice was able to continue working remotely, and she filed for a permanent restraining order.
After two months, she secured an Order that included a "move-out" provision, requiring her partner to vacate their shared apartment. Before returning home, Verenice changed the locks and found a roommate.
Knowing she has a friend, a restraining order, and the continuing support of La Casa's community, Vernice is feeling strong and grateful this holiday season.
