Growth and Service: Impact on Our Community

For 35 years, La Casa de las Madres has provided safe alternatives for survivors of domestic violence, growing our services to connect women, teens and their children with the tools and resources they need to build and sustain healthy, thriving lives. Today, we respond to the immediate and long term needs of survivors with a broad spectrum of resources, from legal services to supportive housing, support groups and individual counseling. We recognize that domestic violence can affect anyone, anywhere, crossing all lines of race, gender and income. Thus, La Casa’s services are multilingual, culturally competent and available to all survivors completely free of charge.

Specifically, in the 2010 calendar year, the following services were provided with your support:

  • La Casa responded to 4,381 statewide, toll-free Adult and Teen Hotline calls, providing crisis counseling, resources, and referrals;
  • 904 domestic violence victims accepted the crisis intervention or follow-up assistance of La Casa’s Domestic Violence Response Team, a collaborative effort with the San Francisco Police Department;
  • 228 women and 194 children found refuge and support in our emergency shelter;
  • 589 women survivors accessed practical and emotional support services through La Casa’s Drop In Center, the hub of our community-based interventions;
  • 141 adolescents participated in individual and group activities of the Teen Program;
  • our Case Management Programs provided housing stability, community-building and emotional support services to 193 residents of the city’s only women-only supportive permanent residences, the Mary Elizabeth Inn and Verona Hotel;
  • the Safe Housing Project worked with staff of subsidized housing sites across the Bay Area, and provided direct intervention to resident domestic violence victims and their families; and
  • The Community Education and Outreach Program conducted 527 domestic violence trainings, healthy relationship workshops and service presentations, educating 5,999 teens and adults and reaching an additional 42,000 people.

Available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, La Casa continues to improve access to safety and empowering support. The number of domestic violence victims and survivors we help has steadily grown: last year, 2,089 women, teens and children participated in direct, in-person support services, representing a 92% increase over 5 years. And that doesn’t include our hotline calls or community outreach!

Thank you for your continued support – we couldn’t do it without you!
